TUESDAY 1 Feb at 7pm: Two Stories by L. Sprague de Camp

The Reluctant Shaman & The Merman

The Reluctant Shaman: Virgil Hathaway, an Algonquian Indian running a souvenir shop in Gahato, New York, is stuck with the task of babysitting a band of stone-throwing sprites from the Iroquois country. When they begin terrorizing the town in their efforts to be "helpful" he has to bone up quickly on Iroquoian magic in order to control them.

The Merman: Aquatic scientist Vernon Brock develops an organic vapor that he hopes will allow a baby alligator to breathe under water. When he accidentally drops the beaker containing his halogen-bearing compounds, Vernon realizes he'd never considered how similar an alligator's lungs are to his own.

In days of yore people disappeared and the Fae folk, or 'Them Ones', were blamed. Today we have abductions and little grey aliens are blamed. Is there a connection? In the Bible John 10:16 says "And other sheep have I that are not of this fold." This is the first in a series of sessions in which will examine the connections between Faeries and Aliens. Tonight we will start with several old 'Faerie Tales' of abductions.

Edgar Allan Poe. Born on this day in 1809. He was often drunk and always broke, but some claim it was this inner life that contributed to his wayward genius. He related to us his feverish nightmares, his macabre tales, his obsession with death. He also gave us lyrical poems of unsurpassed beauty, and he was the father of the modern detective novel. Join us tonight to celebrate this man that walked the earth for a mere 40 years and yet continues to influence the world two centuries after his death.

WEDNESDAY 12 January at 7pm: "Æsop's Fables" with Caedmon Sharkfin

Æsop's Fables

The old stories are great stories, simply because they touch us in some way: a lesson learned, a truth told, heartstrings plucked. The oldest stories still told, still printed, and still attributed to one author are from ancient Greece, and have little to do with their gods. Come join us and hear again Æsop's fables. Stories in voice.

MONDAY, January 10th at 7:00pm: Part II of "Heidi"

There's bound to be goats somewhere . . . and most likely cheese.

"The Gnarly Man" by L. Sprague de Camp

This Gnarly Man fellow is a fortuitous survivor from the old, old days. He's been a lot of places and worked competently at a great variety of jobs over the last fifty millennia; when we meet him, he's getting by as an ape-man act in a sideshow at Coney Island. He passes for current folk well enough in civilization, and skates officialdom by having used a long succession of false identities. At the moment he's going by the name of Clarence, and has papers for it.

MONDAY, January 3: Part I - Heidi

Heidi (the Girl from the Alps) is a two-volume novel written by Johanna Spyri, which was published in 1879 / 1880, became a world-wide success story already towards the end of the 19th century and children still love it today - as a book, as a radio play and as a movie.

Heidi is by far the most popular piece of Swiss literature ever written and has been translated from German into 50 languages, been filmed more than a dozen times, and more than 50 million copies of Heidi books have been sold world-wide (Switzerland's population is only 7 million ...).
