TUESDAY, August 30th at 7pm: INNOCENTS ABROAD ~ Selections with Trolley

The Innocents Abroad humorously chronicles what author MarkTwain called his "Great Pleasure Excursion" on board the chartered vessel Quaker City (formerly USS Quaker City), through Europe and the Holy Land, with a group of American travelers in 1867. It was the best-selling of Twain's works during his lifetime, as well as one of the best-selling travel books of all time.
Twain recorded his observations and critiques of the various aspects of culture and society he encountered on the journey, some more serious than others, which gradually turned from witty and comedic to biting and bitter as he drew closer to the Holy Land. Once in the Holy Land proper, his tone shifted again, this time to a combination of light-hearted comedy and a reverence not unlike what he had previously mocked in his traveling companions.
Many of Twain's criticisms were based on the contrast between his own experiences and the often grandiose accounts in contemporary travelogues, which were regarded in their own time as indispensable aids for traveling in the region. Above all others, Twain lampooned William Cowper Prime's Tent Life in the Holy Land for its overly sentimental prose and its often violent encounters with native inhabitants. Twain also made light of his fellow travelers and the natives of the countries and regions he visited, as well as his own expectations and reactions.

MONDAY, August 29th at 7pm: THE CRUCIBLE OF TIME

Gyro Muggin’s takes his audience into the novel by John Brunner. First published in 1983 as a novel-length series of stories grown out of a two-part story first published in Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine.

Imagine a planet existing in a debris-strewn corner of the galaxy. Cosmic dust and rubble cause an endless succession of ice ages followed by tropical warmth followed by more ice ages, and on and on. Meteors of all sizes plummet to the surface of the planet frequently and burgeoning civilizations have a sad tendency to be wiped out all of a sudden. Society survives, sort of, but the brightest scientists know that to survive long term, the race has to transcend the surface of the planet and become a space-faring species. In a story that spans millennia, a determined group of people take control of their own evolution and build the technological society that will be their way into space. Long before Brian Aldiss’s magisterial Helliconia series, even before some of Arthur C. Clarke’s grand future visions, John Brunner led the way in imagination and scope of vision.

A grand adventure of an alien world by John Brunner.  Gyro Muggins live in Voice.

SUNDAY, August 28th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street!

THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES begins at Tea Time's summer digs at the University of Washington iSchool in SL.

Dr. James Mortimer asks Sherlock Holmes to investigate the death of his friend, Sir Charles Baskerville. Sir Charles died at his Devonshire estate, Baskerville Hall, and Mortimer now fears for Sir Charles's nephew and sole heir, Sir Henry Baskerville. The death was attributed to a heart attack, but Mortimer is suspicious, because Sir Charles died with an expression of horror on his face, and Mortimer noticed "the footprints of a gigantic hound" nearby.  Intrigued, Holmes meets with Sir Henry, newly arrived from Canada. Sir Henry has received an anonymous note, cut and pasted from newsprint, warning him away from the moors.

The Baskerville family has supposedly been under a curse since the era of the English Civil War, when Hugo Baskerville offered his soul to the devil for help in abducting a woman and was reportedly killed by a giant spectral hound. Sir Charles believed in the curse and was apparently running away from something when he died. Could it have been the legendary spectral hound?

MONDAY, August 22nd at 7pm: THE LOST TUDOR PRINCESS (Selections)

Caledonia presents selections from Alison Weir's Biography of Lady Margaret Douglas.

Come enjoy the reading, and then join the book discussion lead by Lorelei Junot on Wednesday, August 24th at 5:30pm over in the main library area at the Community Virtual Library. All are welcome.

Royal Tudor blood ran in her veins. Her mother was a queen, her father an earl, and she herself was the granddaughter, niece, cousin, and grandmother of monarchs. Lady Margaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox, was an important figure in Tudor England, yet today, while her contemporaries—Anne Boleyn, Mary, Queen of Scots, Elizabeth I—have achieved celebrity status, she is largely forgotten.

The life of Margaret Douglas spans five reigns and provides many missing links between the Tudor and Stuart dynasties. Drawing on decades of research and myriad original sources—including many of Margaret’s surviving letters—Alison Weir brings this captivating character out of the shadows and presents a strong, capable woman who operated effectively and fearlessly at the very highest levels of power.

WEDNESDAY, August 10th at 7PM: More WOMEN GOING WILD IN THE OL:D WEST

Trolley returns with more tales of women, both real and fictional, in the Old American West.
This session she will be including some works by O.Henry (William Sydney Porter) was an American short story writer. O. Henry's short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization, and surprise endings.

O. Henry's stories frequently have surprise endings. In his day, he was called the American answer to Guy de Maupassant. While both authors wrote plot twist endings, O. Henry stories were considerably more playful, and are also known for witty narration.

Most of O. Henry's stories are set in his own time, the early 20th century. Many take place in New York City and for the most part feature ordinary people: clerks, policemen, waitresses, etc.
