THURSDAY June 1st at 7pm: GOLD FEVER - Miner's Tales of the Wild West

"Gold Fever"
Miner's Tales of the Wild West

The typical miner was a bearded young man, dressed in a slouch hat, red long johns, trousers tucked into hlgh-topped boots - he packed a shovel, pick and gold pan. When his dream of easy riches eventually died he often stayed in the West and became a farmer, stockman, tradesman or professional. If married, he sent for his family - if single, he married a daughter of pioneers and started a new family.

The lasting effect of the gold rush was not so much in the individual accumulation of wealth, but in the simple fact that thousands of miners stayed rather than returning home and they helped win the West.

AND DON'T FORGET!  @9PM - SEANCHAI LATE NIGHT with Finn Zeddmore!

WEDNESDAY, May 31st at 7pm: THE 100 WORD PODCAST "DOZENAVERSARY"

Sound the Trumpets!  Crash the Cymbals!  Bring on the Marching Band!

Story writer, story-teller, commentator, raconteur – Crap Mariner is all of these, and more. On May 31st, 2005, after being inspired by both a friend and Woody Allen to write 100-word stories  – or “drabbles” – Crap created the 100-word Story podcast, promising to write a story a day until the day he dies.

Today, 12 years on, Crap is still writing  – and still reading his stories in what is quite probably the longest-running daily podcast of original material in the world.
Seanchai Library is therefore delighted to host the “dozenaversary” of the 100-word story podcast, with Crap reading more of his stories, which will cover a wide range of topics, just like his podcasts. There might even be a George the Pirate story in there somewhere  Crap Mariner, live in voice.

TUESDAY, May 30th at 7pm: OLD MOTHER WEST WIND Continues

Welcome to the timeless world of the Green Forest, the laughing Brook, and the Smiling Pool. Here we meet a menagerie of funny and fascinating animal friends: Peter Cottontail, Jimmy Skunk, Reddy Fox, Grandfather Frog and many more.

Many note that Thornton Burgess and Beatrix Potter were writing during the same rough period of time.  They both have characters named "Peter Rabbit" but other than using animal personalities to teach lessons, the similarity ends there.

Potter wrote stories to teach almost cautionary tales about human habits and behavior, using the animals as substitutes for little boys and girls.  Burgess was a naturalist who celebrated the beauties of the natural world and used his animal characters to illustrate lessons about the earth. he wrote about them for 50 years in books and his newspaper column, Bedtime Stories. By the time he retired, he had written more than 170 books and 15,000 stories for the daily newspaper column.

Join Faerie Maven-Pralou to hear more from Thorton Burgess’ story.

SUNDAY, May 28th at 1:30pm : TEA TIME MYSTERIES "The Thin Man" Continues

Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man continues!

This week we have a full house as the stakes get higher, and more confusing in pursuit of Julia Wolf's killer.  Sometimes, it's hard to remember what crime is which.  Corwyn Allen, Kayden Oconnell, John Morland, and Caledonia Skytower present.

Having trouble following the characters various?  Use this list as a handy guide:
Nick Charles: the narrator, a onetime detective, now a lumberman. Humorous, self-possessed, tough, and intelligent, he discovers clues, arranges them, makes deductions, and solves the murders. He then summarizes the whole solution for his admiring wife, Nora.
Nora Charles: Nick’s wife, a woman with a well-developed sense of humor, who finds him fascinating.
Clyde Wynant, the Thin Man: a wealthy, eccentric inventor, once a client of Nick.
Mimi Jorgenson: Clyde’s former wife, a showy blond.
Julia Wolf: Clyde Wynant’s secretary, who is murdered.
Dorothy Wynant: Mimi and Clyde’s daughter, a small, attractive blonde who dislikes her family and who asks Nick to locate her missing father.
Gilbert Wynant: Dorothy’s brother, an odd, extremely inquisitive young man.
Christian Jorgenson, formerly called Kelterman: Wynant’s former associate who, feeling unfairly treated, breaks with him. Although he already has a wife in Boston, Jorgenson bigamously marries Mimi to get his hands on the large divorce settlement Wynant provides for her. Temporarily suspected of Julia’s murder, he finally returns to his legal wife in Boston.
Herbert Macaulay: Clyde’s thieving attorney.
Shep Morelli: a gangster and former friend of Julia who thinks Nick knows what happened to her.
Arthur Nunheim: a former convict who identified Julia’s body.
Guild: a detective.
Harrison Quinn: Nick’s friend.

WEDNESDAY, May 24th at 7PM: THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF GORAK THE GOBBLER

Gorak the Gobbler specializes in solving problems with his own brand of wisdom, and playful logic. "...life like drinking soda. All go one way and no stopping: Sip, gulp, no matter. But when bubbles build up, only one ting to do - let em out!"

Ever think about how pressures of life eat away at you? What if there were a magical creature who gobbled away at those very things? In three tales, Gorak charms with his oddly mischievous sense of fun, and his keen understanding what makes us tick.

Welcome to the timeless world of the Green Forest, the laughing Brook, and the Smiling Pool. Here we meet a menagerie of funny and fascinating animal friends: Peter Cottontail, Jimmy Skunk, Reddy Fox, Grandfather Frog and many more.

In this beloved classic, the first in a series of highly popular animal tales by Thornton W. Burgess, children discover the answers to such questions as why Grandfather Frog has no tail and why Jimmy Skunk wears stripes.

There’s also great fun to be had in reading or hearing about the grand goings-on at Mink’s swimming party, Little Joe Otter’s slippery slide, and Reddy Fox’s fishing expedition. These and many other adventures are told in a warm, whimsical way that combines gentle lessons about nature and wildlife with the fun of a good story.

SUNDAY, May 21st at 1:30pm: TEA TIME MYSTERIES: "The Thin Man" Continues

Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man continues!

This week Corwyn and Caledonia present Nick, Nora, and a whole colorful cast of characters as the the mystery continues: who killed Julia Wolf?  Has Clyde Wynant committed suicide?  Where's my drink? (pour me another one darling)

OF INTEREST: Following the success of the movie version of The Thin Man in 1934, Hammett was commissioned to work on screenplays for sequels. During the course of this work, he wrote After the Thin Man and Another Thin Man, which, discovered amongst Hammett's papers in 2011, together with instructions by Hammett for incorporation of additional elements written by screenwriters Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich, were edited by Hammett's biographer Richard Layman in collaboration with Hammett's granddaughter Julie M. Rivett and published as novellas in Return of the Thin Man in 2012

"...With often hilarious results, the author mixes the occult and the mundane, the truly weird and the petty. In "Atrocity," Bob, a low-level computer fix-it guy for the Laundry, a supersecret British agency that defends the world from occult happenings, finds himself promoted to fieldwork after he bravely saves the day during a routine demonstration gone awry. With his Palm, aka his Hand of Glory (a severed hand that, when ignited, renders the holder invisible), and his smarts, he saves the world from a powerful external force seeking to enter our universe to suck it dry. In "Jungle," Bob teams up with a cop, Josephine, to save the Laundry from a powermonger who seeks to stage an internal coup by using zombies as her minions."

SUNDAY, May 7th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME MYSTERIES Resumes ~ The Thin Man

Tea Time is back with a brand new mystery series: Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man, originally
published in Redbook magazine  in 1933, and published in book form the following year.

The story is set in New York City in December 1932, in the last days of Prohibition. The main characters are a former private detective, Nick Charles, and his clever young wife, Nora. Nick, son of a Greek immigrant, has given up his career since marrying Nora, a wealthy socialite, and he spends most of his time cheerfully getting drunk in hotel rooms and speakeasies. Nick and Nora have no children, but they own a female Schnauzer named Asta.

Charles is drawn, mostly against his will, into investigating a murder. The case brings them in contact with a rather grotesque family, the Wynants, and with various policemen and lowlifes. As they attempt to solve the case, Nick and Nora share a great deal of banter and witty dialogue, along with copious amounts of alcohol.
